Stop Your Sobbing - The Kinks / 1964

Stop Your Sobbing은 비틀즈(The Beatles)와 함께 1960년대 영국 침공(British Invasion)을 이끌었던 UK 밴드 킹크스(The Kinks)가 1964년 발표한 셀프타이틀 데뷔 앨범에 수록한 곡이다. 1979년 프리텐더스(Pretenders)가 커버했다. 

 

팀의 리더인 레이 데이비스(Ray Davis)가 만들고 쉘 텔미(Shel Talmy)가 프로듀서를 맡았다. 

 

가사는, 정확한 이유는 알 수 없지만 상대에게 그만 울라고 말하는 내용이다. 화자는 상대의 울음으로 인해 더 이상 관계를 지속할 수 없는 지경에 이른 것으로 보인다. 너무 우울하거나, 너무 부정적인 사람을 만났을 때 가까이 하고 싶지 않은 기분이랑 비슷한 게 아닐까 싶다. 레이는 자서전에서 "여자친구의 잦은 눈물이 죄책감을 느끼게 했어요. 그래서 그만 울었으면 좋겠다고 말했죠. 그녀는 너무나도 외로워했어요"라고 말했다.
