Freak Like Me - Adina Howard / 1995

Freak Like Me는 US R&B 뮤지션 아디나 하워드(Adina Howard)가 1995년 발표한 데뷔 앨범 <Do You Wanna Ride?>에 수록한 곡으로 US 2위, R&B 2위, 연말결산 13위, UK 33위 등을 기록했다. 몬텔 조단(Montell Jordan)의 This Is How We Do It에 막혀 1위에 오르지 못했다. 2010년 빌보드 선정 가장 섹시한 노래 47위에 올랐다. 슈가베이비스(Sugababes)가 2001년 커버해 UK 1위에 올랐다.

 

유진 헤인스(Eugene Hanes), 마크 밸런타인(Marc Valentine)이 만들고 매스 오더(Mass Order)가 프로듀서를 맡았다. 붓시스 러버 밴드(Bootsy's Rubber Band)의 1976년 곡인 I’d Rather Be With You를 샘플링 해 이 곡을 만든 윌리엄 콜린스(William 'Bootsy' Collins), 조지 클린턴 주니어(George Clinton, Jr.)도 저작권을 얻었다. 이 곡은 또한 슬라이 & 더 패밀리 스톤(Sly & The Family Stone)의 Sing A Simple Song도 샘플링 했다.

 

뮤직비디오는 하이프 윌리암스(Hype Williams)가 감독을 맡았고 남성 뮤지션들이 MV에서 자주 보여주었던 친구들과 차를 타고 동네를 도는 모습을 여성의 관점으로 보여주었다.

 

가사는 섹스를 좋아하고 자신은 변태성향이 있어서 자기에 맞는 남자를 찾고 싶다는 내용이다. 남성 뮤지션들이 곡을 만들었지만 여성 뮤지션이 노골적으로 성적인 표현을 한 노래들 가운데 선구적인 역할을 한 것으로 평가받고 있다.

 

아디나는 이 노래에 그치지 않고 1997년 Freak And U Know It을, 2004년엔 Freaks를 발표했다.
