Live And Learn - Joe Public / 1992

Live And Learn은 US 뉴 잭 스윙 그룹 조 퍼블릭(Joe Public)이 1992년 발표한 셀프타이틀 데뷔 앨범에 수록한 곡으로 US 4위, 연말결산 30위, UK 41위, 캐나다 43위 등을 기록했다.

 

뉴 키즈 온 더 블락(New Kids On The Block)이 1994년 발표한 You Got The Flavor에 사용했고 2020년 MBC <놀면 뭐하니? - 싹쓰리>에 사용되었다. 중간의 "break it down" 때문에 사용한 것으로 보인다. 

 

멤버들이 함께 만들고 라이오넬 잡(Lionel Job)과 공동으로 프로듀서를 맡았다. 샘플링을 많이 해서 저작권은 다수가 소유하고 있다. 드럼은 슬라이 & 더 패밀리 스톤(Sly & The Family Stone)의 Sing A Simple Song, 트럼펫은 제이비스(J.B.‘s)의 The Grunt, 보컬 샘플은 제임스 브라운(James Brown)의 Get Up, Get Into It, Get Involved, 소울 칠드런(Soul Children)의 I Don't Know What This World Is Coming To 등이 사용되었고 이 외에도 파일라먼트(Parliament)의 All Your Goodies Are Gone, 스틸리 댄(steely Dan)의 Peg 등이 사용되었다.

 

가사는 사필귀정(事必歸正)이란 말이 느껴진다. 왜곡된 길이나 빠르고 쉬운 길로 가려고 하지 말고 제대로 된 길을 가라고 주장하는 것 같다. 그래서 제발 (총에 맞아) 죽지 말고 살아서 인생을 끝까지 배워나가자고. 그런 의미에서 "bridge"는 교육으로 보면 좋을 것 같다. 뭔가, 흑인 뮤지션들의 사회참여적인 가사가 들어간 노래들을 읽고 있으면 노예해방 이후 지난하게 억압받고 차별받아온, 노곤한 삶이 그대로 느껴지는 것 같다.
